I treated myself this month and finally added a wheel to my studio! I am still very new to pottery in general, and I have a long way to go with the wheel. I learned a few things here and there taking classes at an art store in Salt Lake City, UT, and then again at a community center in Sunnyvale, CA, but I never quite grasped some of the basics.
So far I can center the clay and make a simple, tiny bowl. However what I really NEED to master is the ability to consistently make a cylinder, so that I can make mugs and vases. It’s actually quite difficult for a newbie, and it’s something that I never received any instruction on. Thankfully, I have YouTube to help me out!
One potter that I have been following is Simon Leach. He has a very good, straightforward teaching style and posts a lot of videos on his YouTube channel. Recently I discovered his “7 Steps to Making a Cylinder” video, and spent a good hour or so attempting to follow his instruction. I messed up a few pretty badly, and while I wasn’t able to get a full cylinder I did start to get most of the steps figured out. I could tell that I was improving after each attempt! It will take some time to get there, but I’m confident that I’ll have it down in no time.
The good news is that I ended up with four cute little bowls. They’re not perfect, but they’ll do for now!
Here’s that video if you’d like to take a look:
